The collection consists of three letters written by Margaret Mitchell. The first letter is dated October 1, 1936 addressed to Mr. R. Sobol. This letter gives the author's exact opinion of her heroine "Scarlett O'Hara". Even though the movie may have made Scarlett kindler and gentler, the author did not write her that way and this is important insight into the original intent of the author. The second letter is dated September 2, 1941 and is addressed to "Dearest". This letter is of a personal nature and does not address anything related to Gone With the Wind. It does mention the war ship Atlanta's launching that Mitchell was involved in. This letter is signed "Peggy" a signature Margaret Mitchell only used with family and friends. The third letter is also addressed to "Dearest" and is dated August 15, 1941. It is very similar to the second letter.

Margaret Mitchell (b. November 8, 1900, Atlanta, Georgia-d. August 16, 1949, Atlanta, Georgia), the daughter of Eugene M. Mitchell, was a prominent attorney. Her mother, Maybelle Stephens Mitchell, was active in the women's suffrage movement. Margaret Mitchell attended Atlanta public schools, graduated from Washington Seminary in Atlanta, and attended Smith College for one year before leaving college upon the death of her mother.
